IABA Walks to Fight Hunger

Main Image

On Sunday March 7th 2010, over 20 members of IABA took part in the annual Austin CROP Walk at Robert E. Long Park, despite the possibility of rain. Fortunately it did not rain, and the event was fun as well as a service to the poor and neeedy.

CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. Neighbors walk together to take a stand against hunger in our world. Together we raise awareness and funds for international relief and development, as well as local hunger-fighting.

Twenty five percent (25%) of the amount raised was allocated for hunger programs in Austin. Seventy five percent (75%) was given to two Islamic charities that help fight hunger around the world, Mercy USA and Life USA.

IABA hosts Church Without Walls

Main Image

On Saturday March 6th 2010, members of Church without Walls (CWW) visited IABA for a meeting with Sheikh Ja'far, EC members and other invited IABA members. The President of IABA and several Outreach Committee members were present.

CWW consists of members of several non-Catholic denominations who believe in reaching out to different religions and learning about their faith beliefs. During the meeting, the Reverend McDonald spoke about the Oneness of God from a Christian perspective. He highlighted the Christian belief in One God using verses from the Bible. Sheikh Ja'far then spoke on the same topic, quoting the Quran and ahadith. A thought provoking Q&A session followed with questions fielded to both the Reverend McDonald and Sheikh Ja'far. Topics discussed during the Q&A included Islamic and Christian perceptions of God and how to have a closer relationship with God. The meeting was adjourned on a friendly and cordial note.

Jim Miller, the leader of the CWW team, extended an invitation to IABA members to visit one of their churches and discuss another religious topic of common interest. The guests and IABA members continued their discussions over lunch, complements of one of the generous IABA attendees. Alhamdulillah, both groups learned from this interaction. Commonalities between both faiths were highlighted and acknowledged by the attendees. It was a pleasant surprise to know that the description of God in many of the Biblical passages was similar to the Quranic concept of God. Pertinent religious material was shared with the visitors.
